Short weekend at home

Weekends go by way too quickly when that is the only time you have to spend with your spouse. I got home late on Friday and knowing I had to get up early on Saturday to make it to a Day of Service volunteering opportunity (even though today was the official day, I had to get back to work so I got mine in on Saturday) I basically went straight to bed. BORING wife.

I decided to volunteer this year because I feel like I miss a lot of opportunities to give back with my own two hands because of my traveling schedule. I’ve been wanting to volunteer with Girls on the Run for years, and now I’ve seen it’s a popular blogger thing to do (eye roll) but regardless I think it’s a very good program and I can’t wait to sign up once I’m actually living in one place!

For my volunteer project I signed up to help clean a school in my neighborhood. Even though schools are over crowded in the area Lowell Elementary had some classes that have been unused and needed some care. Lowell elementary in Seattle

An older woman named Matria and I cleaned some of these rooms, wiped down the lunch tables, and cleaned toys in the pre-school room. She was fantastic, we kept the same pace and it was a pleasure to work with her. With the flu going around right now it felt like kind of important work. It didn’t take the entire time that was originally scheduled since we weren’t allowed to paint the room that the coordinator was hoping we could paint. I guess there’s a delicate balance of what people can give in terms of volunteering but also not take away jobs from people who can get paid for what we could have done. It seems a little crazy though, with school budgets always being cut, but unions fighting back volunteers (for the record I’m not anti-union, people need to work!), in the end it feels like the kids will always be the ones to lose in a situation like this. Anyway, we did what we could and then I headed back home to catch up with my husband who said he was dying from the crossfit workout he went to.

I was a tad jealous. We just got our Rx jump ropes in the mail and the WOD had double unders in it. starter flag rx jump rope

I can’t wait to actually use my new rope!! I was super hungry so we headed out to Skillet, ate too much food and came home. We had plans to take the dog somewhere, but, I had to work, so I did some of that and then fell asleep at my computer. John fell into a food coma on the couch and woke me up two hours later. Sorry pup. Short walk instead.

We had a low key night of catching up on some television and snuggling on the couch. I wanted to get a run in on Sunday before heading over to a friends place to watch the start of the Patriots game but we went for a long walk instead. Lazy days. After handing Soli off to my mother in law we headed over to my friends place and I got some baby time in with their adorable son and got to catch up with our friends. We were heading to see Book of Mormon so we had to head out before the first quarter ended so we could grab some dinner. Apparently we missed the big loss that my friends were surely disappointed over! No matter to me, I was enjoying the sunset and some strong drinks.

Loved it! I’ve mentioned that I’ve seen a lot of shows and concerts both on Broadway and off, I love live music. The performers in this show were outstanding, really fantastic voices. The show was hilarious, as expected. Our seats were pretty good, I’m kind of a snob when it comes to seats, and these were the best we could get at a fantastic rate through a buddy who works at Swedish Medical Center. We were lucky to get them at all! We’ve known about the show since the summer, so we were basically guaranteed to go, but I heard they sold out quickly and that they were being sold for something like $700 a ticket online.

Not super close to the stage but the sound was good, and we enjoyed the show.

When we got home I had to dump out the clothing from last week’s trip only to replace it with clothing for this week. I also had to finish up some work and then go to bed. Luckily my flight didn’t leave until 11:30 today so I got to go to crossfit with John this morning, I seriously see this as quality time.  We did a hero WOD:Hero WOD Blake

Obviously I scaled quite a bit, but I was happy with my time and my pace in the workout. I’m happy I’m a good and consistent box jumper. I did hand stand push-ups off the box, and whoa, I’ve really declined on my strength there.

I’m hopeful about doing a double tomorrow, only because I have to get at least one run in before Saturday’s 25k. As I’ve mentioned, this will not be an all out race, and considering how John felt on the 10 miler, I can see us just having a good time and enjoying the views on Orcas Island. I’m way more excited about this run than I was about the 10 miler, especially now that I know what to expect in terms of pace and sticking together. I’ll have time to train for speed starting in February, I’m going to lay out my training plan soon for my big goal of sub 1:30 in April. I can’t wait to start training for reals, but first I’ve got to get this 25k out of the way and finish up my last couple of weeks of work.

Then the fun (and the spending more time with my husband) can begin!

    • I haven’t even checked the weather yet, lol! That’s how laid back I’m being about this one. I PROMISE I’ll bring the camera and I’ll even stop versus taking incredibly blurry running photos. I’ll likely take video too, cuz that’s always fun for me.
