Resolution Revolution 2013

“Meh” is what my husband and I have to say after today’s competition. Mainly due to our performance, as we ended up near the bottom of the results in the Rx Lite division:

Resolution Revolution Results 2013

It’s hard to see us, we’re on the left side of the results for the Rx Lite division, tied for 15 out of 20 teams, with 33 points. The mystery WOD ended up being 4 mins of double unders, 2 mins per partner. I’m not sure if it was nerves or lack of recent practice but I had an “off” day with these, hitting only 86 in two  minutes.  This is how we ranked in our heat:

Heat 3 breakdown

Going into it, after seeing other teams compete, our goal was to be under 40 minutes for the whole WOD, we luckily hit that, and we’re trying to be proud of ourselves but as two competitive people, it’s hard not to be bummed seeing our standings.

Here’s how (almost) all of it went down:

And here’s our stream of consciousness for the workout you see above.

WOD #1- max double unders 2 min:

Me:  ack! Where have my double unders gone? Stupid rope! (then a 30-40 rep streak) Wow, my arms are never sore during these what’s going on? Only 30 seconds left, do what you can!

John: Is the slant messing me up? I’m not stringing these together really well.

Right into WOD #2, first movement 60 Squat Clean to Overhead (115/75):

Me: must power clean then squat, there’s no way I can catch 75# in a squat. Wow, this is feeling heavy. At rep 7, I looked at John in utter desperation. Will I be able to do another 23 of these? Finished that round.

John: I got this. Squat clean to thruster for first 10 reps. Thrusters are killing me.

Me: Shit, he’s all in, I’ve got to get tougher. Repped out two in a row, rest, now go.

Repeat: with John getting tired and reverting to push presses.

Next up (not seen in video) 4 Hill Runs.

Me: Oh yeah, marathon training pays off.

John: This is horrible, I need to walk.

Me: Ok this is getting tougher, need to dig and push, but no sense in pushing too hard since we both need to touch the bar before we go into burpees. Keep cheering on John, he’s got it!

John: Okay picking it up, running, doing best I can

Me: It’s all good we’re passing people!

Onto 100 Burpees

Me: Do 3, oh my god my hands! Get gloves quick! Slamming knees on the ground hurts. Get 10 done and pass onto John.

John: 10 at a time, get through, 10 at a time.

Me: Just keep swimmin, just keep swimmin.

(Likewise til we both hit 50)

Finally Deadlifts (145/115)

Me: okay, wow, burpees gassed me. oh crap time has passed quickly. Let’s get this done. Touch and go. All 25, make it happen then I’m done. UCK, I need a quick rest. (John counts off) and I’m back on the bar. 115 is my body weight!! Okay, finish this up. Another rest, don’t drop the bar and get a no rep! Ok last reps, and help add on weights.

John: TOUCH AND GO. At rep 20, shit, can I rest? Just 5 more, push it in and we’re done. DONE!

Afterwards: We did okay, right? hmm, these other Rx-Lite teams are finishing faster than us. Maybe we’ll be middle of the pack? Waiting around for two more heats to finish… waiting for results… seeing results… immediately silent.

We were not impressed with ourselves. We kept on thinking where each of us wasted time. For me it was very clearly the clean and jerks and the deadlifts. John was beating himself up about the hills and double under score. We’re both wondering why we’re not more sore. Last year we felt like we couldn’t walk for days, this year we’re planning on running at least an hour tomorrow. Did we not go hard enough? How do we bring more intensity to it? I think at times during the clean and jerks I just got in the zone and was able to rep two back to back, but then struggled to gain the mental strength to keep that up for a third rep.

We know we want to talk to our current coach who competes as a FireBreather and see what he has to say. We want to talk to him about other competitions and how to train for them. I know that I won’t do another for awhile, since my next big goal is a sub 1:30 (training is set to start in Feb, pregnancy pending of course).

What do you do after a disappointing performance? Any crossfitters with advice on how to bring the intensity to something like this?

    • Thanks Sana, I’m excited for you and your friends to give it a try!! Let me know if you have any questions, I’m a quick google hangout away :-)

  2. Those weights are bigger than you are, oh my!! I often find that I’ll get my period just a day or two after an unexplained “off day”, maybe that’s yours? or something even better?

    • I think the “off day” was mainly for the double unders, and I’m sooo hoping to not get my period, but we’ll see, not quite time for it yet. I think we just didn’t bring the intensity like we should have. We went in with a little bit of negativity and I think it took over us. There were places where we both could have tried harder and didn’t, maybe because of fear, maybe because we over thought it. Good lesson though and I killed my workout this morning so I’m happy about that. Only way we have to go is up!

  3. You BOTH rock!! I loved watching you both getting after it! You are so strong and tiny! Seriously, wish I had your strength! Cheers to you both rocking crossfit even more in 2013!!
